Our new art class schedule is now available and it is bursting with fresh ideas for you to express your creativity!  Come join in the learning, fun and freshness of the season!

SEWING:  SEW A GRANNY BAG

KILN-FIRED GLASS PENDANTS:  Dichroic Glass Pendants

Mondays, April 8 & 15    6:00 to 8:00 PM
Instructor:  Lynn Haust
Members $130; Non-members $145.00, materials & firing fee included.
Ages:  15+
Class Min. 4, Max. 8
Materials includes: Bullseye glass COE 90, 2 glass firings, use of glass cutting equipment, fine silver wire, and 2 sterling silver chains and a detailed information packet.

This fast paced 2-session class will give you a chance to explore kiln fired glass and many of the techniques that make melting glass so exciting.  Create several kiln-fired pendants, working with clear and black dichroic glass.  In the first class we will be cutting the glass and then fusing the glass into one large block.  In the second class you will be cutting and shaping the glass into the final shapes.  You will learn several techniques of glass cutting including coldworking, to shape the glass pendants.   The glass will then be fired a second time to fire polish your glass pendants.  Get ready to work hard and have fun.  Due to firing and annealing times your pieces will be fired off site and returned to Artistic Roots for pick up.
Glass technology, safety, equipment, resources and creative directions will be covered.


KIDS CLASS!:  MAKE A HULA HOOP!

Make a swirly, twirly hula-hoop with Stacey! All materials are included to make your very own personalized hoop, as well as a demo and instructions for future hoop making. It's great fun and exercise for all ages!


DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY BASICS: Getting More out of YOUR Camera

Materials Needed: Digital camera (point and shoot or SLR), camera manual, tripod (optional, but recommended; HINT: a bag of dried beans makes a great substitute tripod!!)

 
Spring is here, and with it comes a wealth of things to photograph! Brush off your digital camera and prepare to take your best shot! Mystified by the settings and buttons on your digital camera? Do you point your camera at vivid sunsets…and end up with faded, washed-out images? Maybe you know what you see but can’t seem to get your camera to agree! If so, this one-day, beginner-level class is for you! We’ll learn about basic photo settings (white balance, ISO speed, shutter speed and aperture), and learn through hands-on class activities how to manipulate these settings on YOUR camera so that you can have greater control over your images, whether birds at the feeder, kids at play, flowers, landscapes, or flowing water. *Class will be a combination of indoor and outdoor learning (weather permitting), so come prepared for variable spring weather!



MAKE YOUR OWN EARRINGS

Make 3 pair of earrings in 2 hours or less!  Express your ideas through color, shape and an assortment of materials, including:  Sterling silver, semi precious stones and shrink plastic.  You will learn how to create your own sterling silver ear wires and learn several wire working skills.  Have fun, work hard, and feel fantastic creating your own quality jewelry.

RUG HOOKING

This four-week class is a primitive (wide cut) class for
the first time rug hooker or the intermediate rug hooker
that needs help on a project.  We will cover what materials, preparation, technique and color planning.

Spring Wildflower/Photography Walk

Class Size:  1-5  Adults
Materials:  Digital camera (point and shoot or SLR), camera manual, tripod (optional, but recommended; HINT: a bag of dried beans makes a great substitute tripod!!), comfortable shoes for walking on uneven, possibly muddy terrain, and dress for classic New England spring weather!
Got cabin fever and a digital camera? Do you long to know more about the earliest spring wildflowers right in our backyard in Plymouth AND how to better capture them on camera? This one-day, beginner- to intermediate-level class is for you. We’ll spend some time in the gallery reviewing basic photo settings (white balance, ISO speed, shutter speed and aperture), and learn--through hands-on class activities--how to manipulate these settings on YOUR camera so that you can have greater control over your images. We’ll then stretch our legs and travel (by foot or car) to the floodplain forest behind the Plymouth Ice Arena to find and photograph the early spring wildflowers in this unique ecosystem.

Express yourself in your own handmade journal.  Learn several bookbinding styles using quality papers and explore an assortment of materials and ideas to create your book. 



Drawing Class:  Drawing in Negative Space
Monday June 3,   10 AM-1 PM
Instructor:  Penny Burke

Teens & Adults, Class Size 1-8

This workshop will encompass tapping into the right side of the brain by drawing negative space (area surrounding the actual object at first) and drawing upside down images. Drawing from actual still life at from several angles and drawing from a favorite photograph are just some of the exercises as well as fun brain challenges. Come enjoy some fun and great ideas and bring a lunch, if you wish. This is geared for beginners to advanced, or just anyone looking to expand their inner artist at heart.

Penny Burke of New Hampton, a graduate of UNH, with Bachelor of Arts, instructs this workshop. Her special interests are 2 dimensional arts in graphite and oil medium. For more information and to sign up for the workshop, call the gallery at 536-2750.

MOSAIC CLASS

Saturdays, June 8 & 15    1:00 to 4:00+

Class Size:  3 – 4

This mosaic class will introduce you to the basics of mosaics, different kinds of tesserae (tiles), adhesives, mosaic styles, the various ways to lay tile, and the use of simple tile cutting tools and how to grout your piece.  Everything you need will be supplied.  You will receive personal guidance as you mosaic a wall piece to take home.  No art or mosaic experience necessary!

BeginnING Calligraphy
Saturday, June 22 and 29    1 – 3 PM

Calligraphy, or the art of beautiful writing is as old as writing itselfMany of you may have always wanted to learn how that beautiful handwriting is done.   Well, here is your opportunity in a nice classroom setting you can learn the basics of Calligraphy.   You will just need to relax, focus and learn some very simple “rules” of this disciple of writing as a personal artistic expression.  With practice and attention to the few relatively simple methods you will learn in this class, you too can have “beautiful writing.” 

Kathy will provide some basic materials, which you may keep for your own, to practice and continue your passion for beautiful writing.  In the two, two-hour sessions you will learn the basics of Calligraphy and enough knowledge to go forth and do beautiful things with your newfound skill. 

Kathy has been doing Calligraphy for over forty years. She has done commissioned work for the Department of the Defense, weddings, requests for personal mementos, & poems.  Most recently Kathy has provided artistic additions to Fly Art Designs, Ltd. artwork which is her husband, Tom’s art business in Rumney.
